#Beingaleader requires you to communicate. Well.
I start this topic with that statement because so many people communicate. Poorly.
Communication is defined as having the person you are communicating with understand what you said and meant.
Whether face to face. Texting. Facebook Messenger. Email. Instagram. Video. You need to learn to communicate to different types of people. Not just communicating to people who are different position-ally from you but to people with different types of communication styles or meaning paradigms.
For a simple discussion on this topic go read Tom “Big Al” Schreiter’s book called “The Four Color Personalities for MLM” https://bigalbooks.com/book/fourcolors/. While this book specifically focuses on network marketing, the information is applicable to each situation you face. What’s interesting is that you have to use different words to communicate the same message to different people because they hear differently.
To a Red personality you have to talk about achieving goals and winning. They want to know what the win is and what the prize is for accomplishing the goal.
To a Yellow personality you have to talk about helping others and perhaps share your feelings. They want to know how to help people.
To a Green personality you have to give more information and the details are important. They want to know how it works.
To a Blue personality you have to make it exciting and energetic. They want to be where there is fun and a party.
If you want to ask someone to come to a meeting you would say this to a Red: “Come to my meeting. It’s going to be excellent. We’ve achieved our goals and our team is winning. We’re giving away prizes.”
To a Yellow you would say “Come to my meeting. We’ve been helping a lot of people and we could really use your assistance. Can you bring cookies?”
To a Green you would say “Come to my meeting. There will be lots of information and details given but we won’t call on you and you won’t have to talk to people. Here’s a brochure.”
To a Blue you would say “Come to my meeting. It will be awesome. You can meet lots of people and the energy will be high. Please bring balloons.”
#Beingaleader means you seek out the way that people hear you. If you tell a Red all about your feelings they won’t care and wonder why you’re wasting their time. A Yellow will give you a hug. A Green may want more information about your situation. And a Blue will smile and introduce you to all their friends.
#Beingaleader means you know how to communicate in each of these situations. Awareness first. Then having the knowledge of how to communicate. And finally the application of that knowledge to the specific situation.
#Beingaleader means you have to communicate with all of these types of personalities. It means you recognize your strengths and weaknesses in how you communicate but more importantly you understand how to effectively get your message out to everyone on your team.
