#Beingaleader means you set the tone for your team. You create the atmosphere so be careful in selecting what that atmosphere is going to be.
It is very difficult for your team to rise emotionally above where you are at so set the bar high. Everyone of us has ups and downs. #Beingaleader means you need to stabilize those ups and downs so that the team sees as even a keel as possible. That is not to say you have to be a particular personality type. It means you need to be intentional about what you portray to your team as what you project you will receive back.
#Beingaleader means you have to choose your emotions carefully especially in front of your team. Sometimes that means you have to shield them from those above you. I remember one vacation week where my Blackberry was blowing up with problems back at the office. When I came home I discovered tears and threats of resignation from my team leaders. The cause? They had to directly work with my boss without me as a buffer. While that situation resolved itself without anyone leaving my team it showed me (and them) that #Beingaleader often means you insulate your team from the ‘heat’ above and instead instill in them a sense of security, peace and the resulting teamwork necessary to get the job done.
#Beingaleader sometimes means you have to speak truth even if you don’t feel like it. For example, you may be down or depressed but you have to speak joy, inspiration and teamwork to your team in order for the whole group to be lifted up. For example, you may have lost a major contract (for whatever reason) and everyone is down. Your job would be to set the tone about that perceived depressing news with hope and opportunity and greater things that can be accomplished if we work together. That’s not fake. It’s #Beingaleader.
That is not to say you shouldn’t be real or hide your emotions. It means you need a safe place or inner circle to express those emotions but to the larger group/team you need to project the truth in a situation. That we can do this together. That we will succeed. That we can be joyful even in the midst of trials.
#Beingaleader sets the tone. Choose the tone, wisely.
