Stand Firm

This coming weekend I will be speaking at my church’s men’s retreat on the subject of Standing Firm (see 1 Cor. 16:13 for context). What was surprising to me as I prepared was that we are told to stand firm. Not to stand still. It is an active thing. Not a passive one.

#Beingaleader means you advance while you stand firm. The perfect example is the first battle scene from the movie 300 (https://youtu.be/HdNn5TZu6R8) (Note: graphic battle scene). No retreat. No standing pat. Only moving forward. Together. That is standing firm. That is what our armor is for.

#Beingaleader means you are always moving forward. If you really believe in what you are doing then don’t stop. Keep going. It doesn’t matter the obstacles, the roadblocks. Just keep going. If you are on the right path then the road you are on will take you to where you want to be. (See Andy Stanley’s book “The Principle of the Path” for an in depth discussion of this topic.)

#Beingaleader means you lean into challenges rather than running from them. Challenges are not obstacles but merely stepping stones to achieving success. We too often think that success means an easy road. We need to change our mindset.

In the spiritual context we can learn from many examples that it is often in the good times that we stray from the path. We get complacent. We get comfortable. Maybe we get bored. It is in the hard times that we seek help, that we have to push through and it is because of those times that when we achieve success we can celebrate victory.

#Beingaleader means we need to stand firm.
