#Beingaleader means you lead. Something. All the time. Small. Big. It doesn’t really matter. You hone your skill in the doing. There is no substitute for this action.
Reading and listening to the advice of others are important and good and can give you examples of how you should do things. But you learn more in the doing. So lead. Learn from others but implement the learned things yourself to see them put into action.
#Beingaleader means you have people who follow you. I have heard it said that if you’re leading and no one is following you then you are just on a walk. So leading means that you are going with others toward a destination. Lead them to the best of your ability. But lead.
Don’t fall into the trap of just talking and not doing. There are lots of really smart people who know it all but have never led anything. Ignore them. They may have advice but wisdom is usually missing.
John Wimber used to say that he didn’t trust any leader who didn’t walk with a limp. What I think he meant in part was that leading brings experience. Experience includes hurt from troubles you have gone through. Hurt from troubles can lead you to humility. And humility is the best thing for a leader. It makes them trustworthy and someone you should follow.
#Beingaleader is not something you gain from osmosis. It comes from actually leading. So lead. And learn.
