Are you a doer or a thinker?
That’s an interesting question to me. One that needs to be pondered more often than it is. While we all would like to answer “both”, I believe that most of us are doers by nature and thinkers only by learned discipline. We like to “accomplish” things and not “waste” our time by “doing nothing”.
But perhaps we are missing out on the most important part of doing: determining the why. #Beingaleader means we need to create time to think. “But I’m too busy doing”, you say. That might be the problem that only thinking can solve. In order to determine the why, how, what etc. you need to spend time to strategically think about what you are actually trying to accomplish.
Carving out time is strategic. It might be moments in length during the day but it must also include periods of time (quarterly, annually or whatever) to help map out your destiny and that of your team. This is more than New Year’s Resolutions. I’m talking about thinking. Perhaps letting your mind wander into dreams that have laid dormant for too long. Thinking about the bigger picture. The why.
This exercise is both refreshing and invigorating for helping you to do more than you ever thought possible. To accomplish goals. To achieve new heights. For some, dreams come at night, are spontaneous and open up new avenues for doing something. For me, dreams come from thinking. Allowing my mind to get out of the task oriented mindset long enough to help me see things that are not yet reality but could be mine.
#Beingaleader means you need to carve out time to strategically think in order to make the doing part of your day worthwhile.
