#Beingaleader means you need to think about being replaced. Succession. Carrying on the vision. And you are never too young to start thinking about or preparing for this. If your vision is important enough for you to spend your life on isn’t it important enough to keep it going after you’re gone (whether moving on, retiring, death etc.)?
Training on vision to the next generation will help keep the momentum going. That doesn’t mean they will have the same exact vision but they can take the best of what you brought to the table and go from there. They will have new challenges. New opportunities. Things you never saw coming. But they will be prepared with the legacy that you brought to them.
Training on skills is also critical. Too much can be lost and have to be redone. Re-learned. Instead, pass on what you know. Give people the permission to take what you’ve taught them and grow with it and expand it. President Reagan had a plaque on his desk that read “There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he does not mind who gets the credit.” This should be our attitude. Don’t hold back. Give it away.
Training on heart is what actually keeps the vision and skills going. The why. The passion behind what you’ve been doing. If people can see your heart and make it their own then they can withstand difficulty and obstacles and just keep pressing on. Often it is more important to know the why then the how. The how will change. The why can grow in complexity and detail but the heart remains the same.
This is all true whether we are talking about parenting, a particular ministry or philanthropic activity or can even be your job. Your job, however, is likely at the bottom of the list of things you need to pass on to the next generation. Instead, instill hard work; character; skills; passion; vision etc. They can decide how to implement that in their career path.
#Beingaleader means you need to think about the next generation. If it was worth doing in your generation won’t it be worth doing better in the next?
