Rest

#Beingaleader means you learn how to rest. It’s a skill. You learn how. Sometimes a change is as good as a rest. But sometimes only rest can actually be rest.

Rest is needed daily, weekly and annually. Too many people neglect rest. And they burn out. They get sick. They stop leading. They think they can’t afford ‘unproductive time’ yet it’s that very rest that allows them to be a high achiever with the remainder of their time.

Daily rest is needed to meet the daily challenges. This could be moments of deep breathing. Moments of reflection. Time on a hobby. Napping. Purposefully not thinking about the daily tasks or responsibilities. Letting your mind rest for a moment or two to recharge and prepare for a meeting or difficult conversation.

Weekly rest is prescribed for in the Bible. After six days of working, it’s important to rejuvenate. It’s impossible to list the ways. You have to find the thing that brings you back to being ready for the upcoming week’s challenges. It’s different for everyone and the what is not as important. Just do it.

Annual rest. Sometimes called a vacation. A holiday. A sabbatical. Do not neglect this. It’s important for your family too but it’s critical for you personally. Too many people neglect this one and think they are advancing their careers by not taking the alotted time that they may have. Don’t do this. Regardless of finances, you need to take the time. Maybe it’s a stay-cation. Maybe it’s project-based time. Or maybe it’s sitting on the beach. But don’t neglect it. You get no extra points for neglecting it.

#Beingaleader means you learn how to rest. So now I must show leadership by example and go take a nap.
