Encourage

#Beingaleader means it’s your job to encourage others. To encourage is to give someone else the courage to keep going. To finish a task or to keep plugging along. To give them hope and strength.

But how do you encourage someone? Here are three ways: tell someone that they can do it; that they have what it takes. Remind them of past victories/successes that apply to the present situation. And say something about their character that perhaps they have forgotten or can’t see in the moment. These three ways can be applied to friends, family and colleagues.

Tell them they can do it. I know that sounds obvious. But it still can be very powerful to actually verbalize to someone that you believe in them. That they have what it takes. So many people lack confidence. Even given a history of successes. Whether it’s insecurity or fear of failure, many people need this type of out loud statement on a regular basis.

Remind them of past successes. Confidence can come when they are reminded of past successes. Whether it’s a similar task or totally different challenge, just reminding them that they’ve achieved success before can provide the inspiration to believe in themselves for the current situation.

Say something about their character. Sometimes it’s not enough to simply outline past successes. Sometimes it’s deeper than that and it’s important to tell them that you believe in them. That they have what it takes.

#Beingaleader means you should encourage someone today.
