Popular

#Beingaleader means you need not worry about being popular. You will be. Popular is formally defined as being liked or admired. I would view popularity more vainly than the official definition. When someone is popular it usually means they are superficially liked by people that don’t know you. You see this with athletes, industrial leaders, even celebrities.

Here’s the thing: You will be popular. But you may be popular for different reasons than you think. Or want. People will act like they know you. That they know your motivation. They may be drawn to you because they like you in some way or because of what you can do for them. Sometimes the attention is too much to handle and either causes you to think more highly of yourself than you should or it simply gets overwhelming and you want to be left alone.

Popularity should not your goal. Doing the right thing is. And #Beingaleader is about making the right decision. Not always the popular one. Yes, you get input from those around you. Yes, you look at all the evidence and facts about a situation. But in the end, do what’s right. As some say, you should only have an audience of One to worry about.

#Beingaleader means you have to look beyond what may be popular. Sometimes you have to actively seek out those things that are contrary to what everyone wants. How else does innovation come into the discussion if you are not seeking some unpopular things or ways of doing things?

Pull from your experience and the experiences of others. They do not have to be in your field to have input into your life. In fact, many new ideas and ways of looking at things come from outside your area of expertise and your job is to find the application into your field to make something work.

#Beingaleader means you will be popular in some eyes. It’s important not to let that interfere with doing what’s right.
