Togetherness

#Beingaleader means you do things together with others. A group of people. A team. It usually presupposes some level of connection and proximity to others. Meetings. Gatherings. Impromptu check ins. For most of us it required physical presence for many of these tasks. Or at least we thought it did.

There are different levels of impact that these shelter in place orders have had on people. For some, they are now at home with nothing to do. For some, it is business as usual except they now do it remotely. For others, it is a busier time than ever. More meetings. More calls. More tasks. All three types of people might be on your team now whether through work or through a voluntary organization.

So in this new reality, how do you create togetherness? Connectedness? How do you get beyond the physical realities we find ourselves in and still move your team towards the goal or the accomplishment of the task?

Well for one thing, we need to change our definition of togetherness. While a zoom video call or other video conferencing system is one way, it is not enough to create togetherness. I for one am now slammed with zoom and other video calls all day long and find it hard sometimes to accomplish my tasks since there is so much communication going on. We need to find multiple connection points. Yes, a video call is important. But so are texts. Calls. Emails. Other points of contact that provide an opportunity to have your team move forward. Learn what cadence works for you and each member of your team. But keep togetherness as your goal.

#Beingaleader means we have to adapt to the new reality. Even if it’s for a short period of time. Finding ways to motivate ourselves. Finding ways to inspire others on our teams. Doing whatever it takes to create the level of togetherness that your team needs.

#Beingaleader means you need to understand the need for togetherness on your team. Do whatever it takes to make it happen.
