#Beingaleader means you have to deal with the unknown. Unknown events. Unknown circumstances. Unknown reactions. And possibly unknown people.
How you respond to these unknown things, events and people will show a lot about who you are as a leader. Do you react in a knee-jerk manner causing confusion and concern among your team members? Do you create an emotional crisis within yourself or others? Or do you remain calm and level-headed and provide the necessary stability that is needed for your team?
Perhaps this is a skill that can be worked on. Or at least can result from seeing yourself do it wrong in the past. Stability. Calm. Decisiveness of action. These are the attributes you want to project to your team when the unknown hits. I have found that remaining calm is one of the most critical attributes in the initial phases of dealing with the unknown. Give yourself time to think rather than just react. Allow for time to pass to be able to apply the wisdom of experience before jumping to conclusions.
So, are you really prepared for the unknown? You can work through various scenarios in your head. You can read books about others’ experiences. But while you can gain knowledge from others, you really can’t prepare yourself for the unknown without having experienced it once or twice personally. So glean from your own experience whether your reaction was beneficial to you and your team or whether you should reconsider your reaction the next time the unknown hits.
#Beingaleader means you will inevitably face the unknown. Don’t be shocked when it comes. But be ready with a calm, steady hand.
