#Beingaleader means you need to know where you significance comes from and where it does not come from. If it comes from the wrong place it will not last. It will not be real.
Many leaders find their significance in their accomplishments. They seek glory from what they have done. They look upon what feat they have mastered, what they have created and swell with pride and a knowing that ‘they’ did this. But it doesn’t last. It breaks down eventually. You come down from the high. The buildings crumble. The paint chips. The car breaks. If you get your significance from what you have accomplished you will keep striving but will never completely find it.
Some leaders find their significance from the accolades of others. Not so much what they achieved but that others noticed and praised them. They yearn to hear people talk about them with admiration. With respect. “Look what he did”. Pride is puffed. But significance is still missing.
Now I don’t think either of these is wrong in and of themselves. It is good to feel good about what you have accomplished and the adrenaline rush of those cheering you on. But in the end they are not enough. They don’t last. They fade. You have to look deeper. Beyond yourself and the things that you have accomplished.
A true leader finds their significance from within and not from without. The external things can change instantly. Businesses fail. Projects collapse. Economies close. Teams disband. If you rely on those for your significance, what will you do?
Your inner strength. Your ability to have ‘blessed assurance.’ That who you are is a more valid barometer of your significance than anything else. So you need to ask yourself “Who am I?” Answer that question and you will have enduring significance.
