Goodbyes

#Beingaleader means your life can be full of goodbyes. To people. To projects. Nothing seems to last forever.

This week was full of goodbyes. A belated goodbye to a father who’s life we could not previously celebrate together as a family due to borders being closed. A goodbye to a mother who we might never see again. Additional goodbyes to family we see so seldom. A son moving again to another country. Life is full of goodbyes.

Yes, life is full of goodbyes. To jobs when we are downsized. To friends when we go separate ways. To projects that end unceremoniously. It’s simply part of the process especially for a leader. People come and go out of our lives.

How do you respond to goodbyes? Do you mourn? Yes. Do you get bitter? No. Instead of mourning over future loss, celebrate past gain. Instead of wishing times to continue, rejoice in times you had.

Perspective is the key to understanding goodbyes. Are we sad? Yes. But not ungrateful for time we’ve had.

#Beingaleader means you will have many goodbyes. Cherish the time you have with people.
