Vision

#Beingaleader means you already have vision. The ability to see what’s going on now. The ability to see and think about what could be in the future. And, often, even the steps and the people needed to get there.

But it’s much more than that. #Beingaleader also means you need to be able to communicate the vision to others. Not just speak it to them (which is important) but that they understand it (more important) and want to help you achieve it (very important). And here is where it often falls apart.

Lots of leaders have vision. In their heads. But in reality, vision in your head are just thoughts you have. Vision is when it’s communicated to, and understood and implemented by others. As a leader, you cannot overcommunicate vision. Let me say that again. As a leader, you cannot overcommunicate vision. It’s as simple as the instructions on a shampoo bottle. Wet. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Over and over. Until they have heard and understood.

You can determine whether someone on your team has understood the vision when they start acting on it independently and also when they can effectively communicate the vision to others on your, or your organization’s, behalf. It’s at that point that you can begin to refine the vision over time but at least they’ve got the why and where we’re going as a team.

#Beingaleader means you have vision. Get better at letting others in on it.
