Decision-Making

#Beingaleader means you need to have a good decision-making paradigm. How do you make decisions? What’s the criteria you look at? Granted, many decisions you make during the day may not be extremely significant. They might just be decisions that need to be made in order to keep the project going. Oftentimes, people are paralyzed by decisions and it slows or stops the project. And that’s where a leader must step in. But for the major decisions in life: how do you make them? Is there a formula or grid you can use to help you come to a conclusion?

Certainly, the ability to distinguish between right and wrong plays into this. This is my first criteria that some may take for granted. But in today’s world, it does not seem that everyone uses this as their first criteria. Often, people first think about what’s best for them rather than whether it’s right to do. Will it help others? Do you have an internal compass that helps you see whether it’s the right thing to do? Without this compass, your decision-making will be selfish and ultimately hurt others.

Bad experiences can play into this as well. Avoiding the same mistakes that you or others have made in the past should be the goal. Don’t waste those experiences. Learn from them. Grow as a person. Grow as a leader. Focus on helping others with your decision-making.

Finally, how does the decision play into the vision or goals you have personally or professionally? This assumes that you have goals for yourself or your team. This is a very important grid through which you can avoid making bad decisions. Does it advance you in the direction you want to go? If you know where you want to go then you can look at every major decision as a point of reference towards that goal.

#Beingaleader means you need a decision-making paradigm. Make it a good one.
