#Beingaleader means you have to get to the point. Be direct. Say what you mean. Your expectations. Your evaluation of them or their progress. Clearly. Concisely. Using examples when needed but not telling a story without getting to the punchline.
You are not helping others by beating around the bush. It is not kindness to tell people only what they want to hear or what you think will not offend them. Getting to the point means two things in my mind: non-avoidance and truth. Avoidance is something I see all the time. People don’t like confrontation at any level. So instead of saying what needs to be said, they cover it up with lots of words that don’t give clarity.
Also, truth is important to speak. I’m not saying you need to unnecessarily blast someone but it is important that they know where you stand. Are you happy with their progress? Are you satisfied with their growth? Their attitude? Their work ethic? What changes do you want to see? If you never tell them, then then will continue to annoy you for years on end.
I’m not saying go out of your way to be offensive. But being offensive isn’t something that necessarily needs to be avoided either. In terms of evaluating those you lead, it does no one any good to sugar coat or avoid speaking what needs to be spoken. If you really want the best for them, tell them the truth. Tell them directly.
