Toxic

#Beingaleader means you need to avoid being toxic to others and to help weed out those within your organization that are toxic to yourself or others. They will bring you and your organization down over time. They will create attrition and provide a reputation in the marketplace that you do not want and will drive away top talent.

First of all, don’t be toxic to those around you. That means show kindness and affirming behavior rather than tearing them down with your words and actions. Desire their best both personally and professionally. Seek to have them advance whenever possible.

Second, toxic team members are often disrespectful team members. They tend to think too highly of themselves and thus often put others down. Arrogant and often incompetent. That’s a bad combo. Disrespect should not be tolerated. That’s not the same thing as disagreeing. You can disagree but do so respectfully.

The culture you should want, and those that follow you want, is one that is welcoming and encouraging to all your team. Where they desire to stay with you for the long term and they feel part of the team. Longevity saves the company a lot of money and provides the best long term results for your clients or customers.

#Beingaleader means you need to root out the toxic among your team. The sooner the better.
