#Beingaleader means you have to provide your team with structure. Parameters. Direction. How else are you able to define success for them? How else can you achieve the goals of the team? You don’t want to micromanage them but you should provide the expectations and the guardrails for what you are looking for.
It is simply unfair to provide a critique or pronounce ‘failure’ if you have not provided the pathway for success for a team member. Giving them the structure they need to succeed. If you have hired the right team member then they can fill in the gaps with the details but the overall goal needs to come from you as the leader.
Structure can be defined as what gives the essence to a building. Sometimes it is providing the scaffolding for the team while they provide the detail work that fills it in and makes the overall structure. But you provide the shape of the final product.
It bothers me to see leaders with the expectation of failure for their people. That’s on the leader not the team member. They have either failed to provide the structure, the expectations of success, or failed to provide the tools or training needed for the team member to succeed.
#Beingaleader means you need to provide your team with structure. Give them what they need.
