#Beingaleader means you need to seek unity. Unity of purpose. Unity of destination. Unity of winning. Seek it. Meaning you go after the unity you want and need. It doesn’t just happen. In fact, left to our own devices, we will have the opposite of unity. You don’t have to try for chaos and disunity. But to have unity you have to work at it. Hard. And intentionally.

Unity of purpose means you are aligned with your team for the why you are doing something. We have discussed the why on numerous previous entries but everyone knowing the purpose of what you are doing is very important. They need to know the overall purpose and they need to know their individual purpose within the team. How can you support each other without knowing the purpose of what you are doing? Your team will inevitably work counter to each other without each understanding the individual and corporate purpose.

Unity of destination means means everyone on the team knows where you want to go as a team. They are all pulling in the same direction. This relates less to the why discussed above, but is more focused on the how to accomplish the why. Your team needs to be aligned in how you want to accomplish the why. Well we might all agree that making a profit is an important why, the how can be quite different from one person to another and without aligning the purpose within the team, you will be pulling your team in different directions and effectively destroying unity of purpose.

Unity of winning means everyone knows how to define the win. Is it a sales target? Is it the completion of a project or a task? When is it time to celebrate? Winning can look very different from one team to the next. Maybe your win is just surviving the Quarter. Maybe next year the win is to make a profit or have a leader retreat. Winning can be defined many ways and that’s why it’s important that your team know how that team defines the win. So that everyone knows what they are aiming at and, when accomplished, they can celebrate together.
