#Beingaleader means you are a mentor. Whether you know it or not. Intentional or not. Want to be or not. You are a mentor. A trusted counselor. Someone of influence that others look to for guidance, wisdom, answers. An example.
I find that most discussions about mentorship are when someone is trying to find one for themselves. There are lots of such programs and attempts to line up people. And I often look to those I can’t personally know to mentor me. Books. Videos. Conferences, etc. However, this blog is more about being a mentor to others rather than finding one for yourself.
#Beingaleader makes being a mentor unavoidable. Let that sink in. Whether it’s your team. Your family. People you know and even people you don’t know. #Beingaleader means you are mentoring them in good and even some bad ways. They are looking at how you react. How you plan. Steps you take. Steps you avoid. Emotions you act out. Things you say and don’t say.
So what levels of responsibility come into play as a mentor? If others are looking to you as an example, shouldn’t you try and make it a good one? If others are looking to your reactions, shouldn’t it affect how you react? If people are using you as an example of what to do and what not to do, shouldn’t you take a moment and make sure you are also relying on good mentors so that it gets passed along to those you are mentoring? Take stock of how you react. How you decide things. Would you want others to follow your example? Because they will.
#Beingaleader means you are a mentor. Set a good example.
