Assertive

#Beingaleader means you need to be assertive. At least at some critical points in time. It might not be your normal style. It might not be what you are comfortable with. But sometimes you need to be assertive to the betterment of your team and the circumstances you are working under.

Being assertive is not the same thing as being a bully. It’s not about ‘getting your way’ at all costs. It’s about knowing what’s the right thing to do or say in a situation where perhaps the decision maker, customer or someone else isn’t doing something right or even dangerous and you need to assert yourself to resolve the situation. Being assertive in that situation is just #Beingaleader and you likely need to practice this more.

For those that are naturally assertive, they often need to tone it down but be strategic in asserting themselves. If you are always pushing for your way you will breed resentment among your team. It’s about timing and creating a safe culture for everyone and then being assertive at the right moment so everyone knows this is a serious point for you.

For those that are naturally less assertive, you often need to tone it up, at least as the situation warrants it. Being less assertive doesn’t mean you don’t know what the right thing to do in the given moment. But learning to be assertive is part of #Beingaleader and if it doesn’t come naturally to you then you too need to be strategic in its use.

#Beingaleader means you need to be assertive. Learn to assert today.
