#Beingaleader means you need to promote yourself. But you ask, that doesn’t sound like me. It sounds arrogant. Or you’re putting yourself above others. All of my writings on this blog have been under the guise of servant leadership with one specific blog on that very topic directly https://beingaleader.blog/2022/12/13/1557/. However, there comes a time when you need to let others know what you can do and have done. Not to those who already know you. But to those who don’t.
So, how does one promote oneself in a proper and unassuming manner? We all have too many examples of arrogant or self-serving people that shout their alleged qualities from the mountain top. And, if you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you know you don’t want to do that. But methodically listing what you’ve accomplished through the years isn’t bragging. It’s telling the truth to a question that is being asked. Now in an interview for example, they will ask you what you’ve done. You need to be prepared, and willing, to thoughtfully respond to their questions with examples and stories that reflect your accomplishments.
Promoting yourself within the bounds of what you’ve actually accomplished is appropriate as long as it’s done with humility, knowing you did not achieve it all yourself and that you have still so much to learn. I find that it’s often about tone of delivery and focus. Your tone needs to show humility but confidence. Your focus needs to be on your involvement with a team to accomplish things and how your participation had an impact on that event.
There is a Bible verse that says to speak the truth in love. Now, I’m totally taking that out of context here but verses often can be applied to different scenarios. In this context, it means you speak what is true about yourself and your accomplishments but do it in a manner that isn’t egocentric or off putting to the listener. Just speaking truth. In a loving way.
#Beingaleader means you need to promote yourself. Tell them what you’ve done.
