Contrary

Beingaleader means you often need to be contrary. Contrary means doing the opposite or taking a different direction. It doesn’t mean ornery. It doesn’t mean being difficult. It means that you see things differently and you’re not afraid to say it in a manner that is helpful to the cause. You are not cowered into accepting the status quo. Nor are you afraid to rock the boat if it has a purpose.

Asking questions is often viewed as being contrary. Having the ‘audacity’ to question why we are doing something the ‘way we’ve always done it.’ In my mind, asking questions is how you improve the situation. It’s how you innovate and get better, whether it’s a process, product, or just about anything that you’re doing.

Being seen as contrary takes bravery. It often means standing up to power, however that’s defined in your situation. I’ve seen it so often. People in power don’t like being questioned even if the result is a better one. They don’t like being challenged as it makes them feel weak and they oftentimes like to show their power over others by squashing the challenge or question that you bring. Be contrary anyway. It might take some courage, but do it anyway as it’s better for everyone.

Beingaleader means you often need to be contrary. Swim against the current.
