Modern Leadership #1 – Employee Burnout

Beingaleader means you need to adapt and change to not just the culture in general but to the culture and characteristics of the modern employee. We will start a small series on topics that might not have been important or as important 30 years ago but are critically important in today’s marketplace leadership.

We will start with today’s topic: dealing with employee burnout. The truth is, back in the day, no one cared about this. It was likely present. Just hidden. If it was shown, it likely got you fired or labeled as an undesirable employee. But leaders did not deem dealing with it critical to the success of their team.

Today we cannot ignore the reality of employee burnout. Where or when did the illusion that the future would be all about recreation because computers, AI and the modern life would take up all the drudgery of work? Star Trek lied. So did the Jetsons.

Burnout is real and it can affect all those on your team. Overworked. Stressed. Micromanaged. Deadlines. The feeling of not getting ahead. Social media expectations vs. reality. All of these work against an employee’s psyche. Add to that, the various groups and educational institutions that tell you that life is the hardest it’s ever been. Add to that medication. Broken support systems. Loneliness. The sum total can lead to a feeling of burnout.

So, you are the leader. You need to recognize and know how to lead others through it. It is real. And it will affect your team. Especially in a remote environment, you need to be checking up on your team. 1 on 1’s are not just about progress and evaluation anymore. You need to connect. You need to learn something about your team member so you can identify potential hindrances to their success.

Beingaleader means you need to adapt and change to the modern leadership landscape. Start today by learning something about your employees.
