Beingaleader means you need to change and adapt to the modern leadership landscape. We touched on checking on your employees last week. This week it’s the opposite angle to the same thing: showing your vulnerability to your team.
Vulnerability you say? Not me. Never. That’s the same thing as weakness. And leadership is about strength not weakness. But being vulnerable really means exposing your authentic self. There is nothing more modern that trying to be authentic to your team. That’s all this generation really talks about and wants. That’s true in leadership too.
Beingaleader is no longer about the facade that I have it all together. That I have all the answers. And by the force of my will I can make all things happen. When you are seeking to know your team members and their possible burnout issues as discussed last week, you must also be willing to show some of yourself to them. It’s more than small talk. It’s authentically showing a part of who you really are. Not necessarily your weaknesses. But not just your strengths either. Perhaps being authentic and vulnerable is about telling them what you like to read. What you think about in your off time. Something about you and not just about the task at hand.
So why is this important in the modern marketplace? Because if you want true attachment to your team and want to know them as people, you need to go first. You need to show them that it’s going to be acceptable to be themselves and they won’t be held back or critiqued for expressing themselves. If you really want brainstorming. If you really want input. Then you need to create that safe space. And the leader always goes first.
Beingaleader means you need to change and adapt to the modern leadership landscape. Learn to be vulnerable today.
