For many people, remote work started during the pandemic of 2020 and following. And now there are those that want to make employees come back all or part of the time. This is not an article pro or con on those issues but rather how to deal with the reality that some employees will not by physically present but you need to still lead them.
The first thing that leadership needs to get out of their heads is this idea of constant monitoring. Some leaders today thing that they should big brother their employees or they will be taken advantage of. That maybe their team members aren’t working all the time. True or not, you as a leader need to learn to deal with the current reality and not try to push a square peg into a round hole. Things are different today. People want their space. Good employees need to know they are trusted. Micro managing shouldn’t be a thing anymore. Stop it.
Beingaleader means you need to work less on making sure your people appear busy and more on accomplishing goals and agenda items. People can always find ways to look busy. But that isn’t why you hired them. You hired them to get things accomplished. So focus on the goals rather than the 9-5 attitude of the past. Set expectations. Set deadlines. Set goals. And then follow up on them. But if you focus on whether they might have taken a longer lunch or went to the vet during the day light hours, you will lose good people. You will spend your energy on things that should no longer matter. Lead. Don’t manage.
Beingaleader means you have to deal with remote work, hybrid work and other types of changes to the traditional work place team management. Be a leader of today.
