Modern Leadership – Conflict

Beingaleader means you have to deal with conflict. And in today’s modern workplace, conflict can take on a whole new meaning requiring a whole new approach.

Conflict is usually best dealt with face to face. That’s a new problem for this remote world. At best, face to face is via a screen. That creates new challenges. Body language. Attention. Focus. All can be affected and you might not catch the nuance or impact. It’s challenging and requires more language. It requires more opportunity to speak by both parties. It requires attention to detail and likely several follow ups to make sure everyone is on the same page. It’s just harder and requires more effort to make it work. A modern leader needs to make it work.

Conflict used to be dealt with using the same criteria and culture of understanding. That’s a new problem for this remote world. Diversity at all levels can have a positive impact on the workforce but it also is harder and requires a different level of sensitivity in order to not be misunderstood. It’s so easy to think you said X when the person hearing you heard Y. And you might not know it unless you ask follow up questions. Unless you have them repeat their understanding to make sure you are both in agreement. A modern leader needs to make it work.
