Beingaleader means you need to learn to deal with apathy. Yours. And your team’s.
We have touched on previously the fact that people move around a lot today. From job to job. From company to company. Today they are a competitor. Tomorrow an ally. This can lead to a certain amount of apathy. Apathy towards the success of anything but themselves. Apathy about getting better where they are. Apathy towards the success of the company.
You really need to be a leader in these situations. Give them purpose. Give them training for their success. Let them know their place in the team’s success. Do all that you can to bring them back to meaning and hope they see that it’s better for them as well as the team to care. If all else fails, then apathy needs to leave with that person. You can’t allow apathy from one person to infect the others. Be decisive.
Apathy can also affect you. You might be one of those people above. Or you might just be tired of being beaten down in the corporate world. Too many promises unfulfilled. Why try. Why bother. Why get better. These could paralyze you and your effectiveness. You need to keep learning and growing or you will grow weak and die. You need to keep getting input into your life through books, Conferences, videos, podcasts etc. to keep you sharp. You need to grab a hold of your purpose, your vision and let that get you through the down times. Don’t stay there. Don’t live there. Push yourself through apathy.
Beingaleader means you need to learn to deal with apathy. Start caring today.
