Modern Leadership #11 – Lead to Serve

Beingaleader means you need to learn to lead to serve. It’s about giving inspiration. It’s about working for the good of others. I don’t mean you put yourself down or hold yourself back. Rather, it’s about raising the boat with everyone in it and making them better people and better leaders due to your presence in their life.

Command and control was a type of leadership style that should be put to bed at last. If you want to keep and grow great talent you need to be there for them. You need to think of their needs and how best you can help meet them. That’s not some kind of 21st century fantasy land thinking. It’s choosing to make an effort to grow your team as leaders and make a bigger impact on the world around you.

Give credit where credit is due. Be the one to give the praise instead of always waiting for it yourself. Be the one to hope the others around you succeed. Look for ways to improve their career path. Develop them as leaders. Serve them.

Don’t hide information that is not confidential. Tell your team as much as you can. They can handle it and they will be better leaders for it. If you know information that would be beneficial to your team, then share it. It shouldn’t be about hoarding information. Don’t use information as a power play over others.

Always let your team know they can come to you for help. That’s why you’re there. We don’t have doors in a remote environment but give people access to you. Set up the meetings. Call them. Respond quickly to inquiries via text or email. Stop ignoring them. And don’t waste their time with endless meaningless meetings. Cut them short when they no longer provide value to the team. Don’t be afraid to set up shorter length meetings. Make it the new culture of your team. In today’s world, the best way to get outstanding performance isn’t to demand it—it’s to unleash it by serving the people who deliver it.

Beingaleader means you need to learn to lead to serve. Start serving today.
