Beingaleader means you need to provide information to your team. Not horde it. Not assume ‘they can’t handle it’. Not ‘they don’t need to know…yet’. Stop already. If you have information that impacts your team, tell them.
Some say that information is power. And some leaders want to wield that power over their employees. Some do it explicitly. To feel better about themselves because they have the information while others do not. Some leaders hold the information through negligence – meaning they don’t oppose giving the information they just don’t. They forget or they get busy or they think it’s already known by everyone since they themselves have known for some time.
Holding back information that would be helpful to others is abusive leadership. It’s not leadership I want to follow. Whether the information is corrective in nature, or a good result, or pretty much anything else. Tell the right people on your team what they need to know. Don’t hold back from them.
Now, not everyone needs to know everything. But for the most part, leaders get this wrong and share too little. So this is an attempt to shake the branches a bit and get leaders to tell their people what’s going on.
Beingaleader means you need to provide information to your team. Stop holding back.
