Digital Body Language

Beingaleader in today’s world requires you to have a digital body language. This is different than body language in the office where you can see expressions and tone that can help you interpret what is being said. A digital body language is where you have to interpret or communicate the tone, intent and message of your communication in words.

First, when receiving or giving a communication, you must employ empathy in your words. A simple thanks at the end of the email goes a long way. A simple ‘good morning’ at the front can soften the communication. Laying out a quick explanation or understanding of the recipient’s situation so that they know that you know what you are asking of them. Any or all of these can help make you appear more empathetic to your audience.

Second, frequency of communication is also important. Don’t overwhelm your team. But stay connected. There’s always a balance. I don’t need to know every time you go away from your desk. I do need to know if you are out for the day. I don’t need to know why you’re taking your dog to the vet. I do need to know if something is happening that will impact your availability, your ability to meet a deadline or other impacting event.

I’m a big fan of brevity in written communication. Don’t bury the lead, the question or the important information. Too many emails are long set ups for an ask when the ask should be at the front followed by the information as needed. Busy people skim emails. They don’t see your important question in the middle of the third paragraph. Get to the point. Quickly.

Beingaleader means you need to improve your digital body language. Focus on this today.
