Beingaleader means you need to have friends. Friends you can rely on. Friends that can relate to you in a unique way. People who are in your corner. That want you to succeed.
Colleagues. Co-workers. All needed. But friends? Irreplaceable. They provide the input and the under girding you will need to be a successful leader. These friends are often outside your line of leadership and so the relationship is not tainted by lines of authority. It is genuine and life giving to have their input.
Good friends remain through time and geography. They might pass in and out of your current circumstances but they remain ‘in’ your life. They provide balance. Sometimes they even center you when things are going off kilter in your life experience. They can be a sounding board. They can provide motivation, inspiration and even reasons to keep going.
Too many leaders have too few friends. They tend to isolate. They tend to disconnect. Or focus only on those they are leading. This is a mistake that can have life altering impact. Leaders need deep friendships. People who keep them balanced in life. I would argue that leaders need better friends than anyone else. They are that critical.
