#Beingaleader means you are often in the waiting room. Now, I’ve touched on waiting before (https://beingaleader.blog/2021/02/02/waiting/), but the waiting room can be even deeper than simply waiting for something to happen.
What does it mean to be in the waiting room? It means you feel like you have a dream or a promise or desire and it hasn’t come to fruition yet. It means you have hope but it is currently unfulfilled.
What does that mean to a leader? #Beingaleader means that you are constantly in the waiting room. Unfulfilled promises. Unfulfilled desires. Unfulfilled dreams. But you’re working towards them. You’re trying to make them happen. You might even be able to see them in your mind. But it requires time. It requires people. It requires process. It requires opportunity. Some of which are under your control and some of which are not under your control. And so you wait. You plan. You prepare. You do the things necessary to be ready.
But, you still have to wait. It can be excruciating. It can cause you to lose hope if you let it. It can mean deferring gratification. It can mean bewilderment. It can mean a sense of loss. But you stay in the waiting room because you know that’s the only place you can be if you ever want to achieve your dreams. If you leave the waiting room and go for something that is less than your dream you will be unfulfilled. You will wish you had waited.
#Beingaleader means you’re willing to make that sacrifice. It means you’re willing to wait in the waiting room while all of the steps that need to happen actually happen. It can mean loneliness. It can mean being misunderstood in many cases. And yet people often don’t see what it’s like to live in the waiting room. They only see the victories. They only see the outcomes. People don’t write books while they’re in the waiting room as often as they write books about the success they achieved after the waiting room. Like a professional athlete who is seen running top speed for 10 seconds in a 100 m dash at the Olympics but we don’t see the thousands of hours of preparation. Of waiting. Maybe injury and setback. We don’t see the disappointment and the losing along the way. All in preparation for that one moment when the dream is fulfilled and success is at hand. Don’t rush the waiting room. It’s a necessary step to achieving the success you have been working so hard for.
#Beingaleader means you are often in the waiting room. Yup, still there.
