Modern Leadership #9 – Employee Expectations

Beingaleader means you need to understand modern employee expectations. The employees of today. Not the employees of the past.

Today’s modern employee is looking for flexibility. Remote. Hybrid. Flexibility. Stop with the “culture of the company” requires physical presence talk. It’s just not true anymore. I’m not sure if it was even true before. But it’s not true now. Flexibility is king. Getting your work done vs. punching a clock. I know that doesn’t work in some jobs but in most office jobs it does work. Even as a young pup in the work force, it always drove me crazy that the inefficient were rewarded because it took them so long to get things done but those of us who were efficient were penalized. Today’s employees want flexibility about all. Stop with the mouse tracking. The click tracking. Either trust them to do their job or find someone you do trust.

Today’s modern employee is looking for communication. Not just information. Communication. The difference is approach. One is about telling someone something. The other is about attempting to explain the why. Monologue vs. dialogue. Whenever possible, provide purpose behind the information. Allow for feedback to clarify their understanding so everyone is on the same page. They don’t have to agree with what you are saying but they need to understand what you are asking them to do.

Today’s modern employee is looking for accountability. At least of others. Today’s modern employee is tired of the bad or lazy employee being ignored and allowed to continue to bring havoc onto the team. Move quickly and remove them before the good employees have had their fill and move on. I have had to fire employees before. I’ve only regretted waiting so long before taking that step. Never regretted taking the step itself. Your team is important and needs to be protected from the bad apples within. Set expectations and then hold everyone accountable.

Beingaleader means you need to understand employee expectations. They are different today.
