Beingaleader means you do not measure true leadership by what happens when you are sitting at the head of the conference table. Instead, it is measured by what happens when you are completely absent. When you lead a team, the ultimate goal is not to create followers who wait for your command, but to cultivate proxies—individuals who carry your values, your standards, and your cultural DNA into rooms you will never enter.
This is not about telling people what to do. It’s about modeling what behavior and values you want, them internalizing it, believing it, and then modeling it to others. It’s about them understanding the underlying principles you are trying to teach them. The why.
Once they know the why, and are aligned with you, they should be ready to be your representative in areas where they have influence. Areas where perhaps you do not have the same influence. It’s important for your team to really buy in to such an extent that they become ambassadors of the values you want to share and embody.
Ultimately, your legacy as a leader is directly tied to the impact in your absence. If an project grinds to a halt or the culture degrades the moment you log off, you aren’t running an organization—you are in fact the bottleneck. But when your team holds the line, protects the standards, and echoes your voice in a private meeting, you have achieved the highest form of leadership. You have built a proxy that outlasts your presence.
