Beingaleader means you need to learn to give instant feedback. Not just annual performance evaluations. Instant. Feedback. Like, as soon as they do something right or wrong. Confirm it. Encourage it. Give them feedback whenever possible and as soon as possible.
Remember, the whole point of feedback is to encourage certain behavior and outcomes and try to correct or adjust other behavior and outcomes. That can only happen in real time. Doing it 12 months from now will make you miserable now, and them miserable later.
Why do we procrastinate on encouraging others? It should be our go to. It’s not a scorecard of rights and wrongs and determining if the encouragement is warranted based on a balance sheet. But if they did something that you want to see more of, give the encouragement right then. Instant feedback. Why wait? You will miss that opportunity. Something else will happen that you will want to correct and now all they hear from you is negative. Stop that. Give encouragement quickly.
I’m not a psychologist so I don’t know all the terms or the why’s that this makes such a difference in others’ lives. It just simply does. Instant feedback is kind. It’s healthy. It gives a boost or a direction change to the person when they need it. Even if it’s correction, don’t wait. No one wants to do something wrong. Or be told at a later date that they didn’t meet expectations 4 weeks ago. Give instant feedback.
Beingaleader means you need to learn to give instant feedback. Give some today.
