Beingaleader means you need to have the culture that fits who you are and the right people who fit that culture. You cannot betray yourself by having the wrong culture for who you are as a leader or you will get frustrated. And you need the right people for that culture in order for the team to move forward together.
The right culture for you. What does that even mean? How well do you know yourself? What kind of environment do you want to create? That you would want to work in? Is it a culture of shame? A culture of opportunity? A culture of collaboration? You need to find out who you are and how you like to work so that you are completely comfortable with the culture you are creating.
The right people for your culture. Now that you can define the culture that is you, you need to find the right people. People that want to work in that culture. That won’t fight against it. That won’t stand in your way or drag others down a different path. This can be hard to do. It might mean letting go of quality people, but that just don’t fit the culture. It might mean you have to start over in some categories. It’s very difficult to get people to change cultures. Look at any two major companies that combine and you’ll see that culture change can take years. It’s faster to find the right people who want to work in that culture you are creating.
Culture needs to be defined. It needs sufficient time to permeate your team. For the people to really believe or not believe that you want this culture. Press in. Keep speaking it. Keep showing it by example. Exemplify what you want. Then go find the right people that feel the same.
Beingaleader means you need to have the right culture and the right people. Make this a top priority.
